On the 28th of January 2002 the European Parliament and the Council adopted Regulation (EC)178/2002 laying down the General Principles and requirements of Food Law. It lays down definitions, principles and obligations covering all stages of food/feed production and distribution. Consequently, from 1st January 2006 it became a legal requirement for all food businesses however large or small, to implement a documented food safety management system, showing what methods are in use every day, and that you know what to do when something goes wrong. This requirement applies to all members of the supply chain whether local or international.

International importers, retailers and fast food chains need to work with well run companies that understand their vision and care about brand name issues. As such, growers, producers, handlers, packers, and exporters are increasingly expected to understand and implement risk assessment and HACCP, and be certified to a recognized international standard that can reflect commitment to good practice.
It is our view that commitment to EU regulations and international private standards is providing a vital tool for improving efficiency, delivering consumer assurance and enhancing competitiveness throughout the whole supply chain.
